Nativity of Saint John the Baptist – Byzantine Rite – 24 June 2026

Beloved in Christ,

Today, the desert blossoms before its time, and the voice that will shake the Jordan is born into the world. Today, the silence of barrenness is shattered, and the child of promise leaps forth as the dawn before the Sun, for we celebrate not the death, but the nativity of a prophet—the only saint, besides the Mother of God, whose birth the Church exalts with joy.

John is no ordinary man. He is the boundary between the Law and the Gospel, the final flame of the prophets, and the first to point with trembling finger to the Lamb of God. Before he cries out in the wilderness, his life itself becomes the proclamation.

Behold Zacharias, struck mute for disbelief, now released by obedience. His tongue, once bound, is loosed at the naming of the child, and he proclaims what all Israel longs to hear: “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people.” The birth of John restores speech, for the Forerunner comes to teach us how to speak rightly of God—through repentance, humility, and truth.

Elizabeth, once barren, now becomes fruitful, for grace has visited what nature could not heal. Thus God shows us that His works are not limited by weakness or time. He prepares His servants in hiddenness, shaping vessels of fire within the quiet chambers of patience and prayer. As John is formed in the womb, so the Word is already drawing near.

John is born before Christ, just as he will die before Christ, for his entire existence is an offering that points beyond itself. He decreases, so that Christ may increase. He is the lamp, not the Light; the friend of the Bridegroom, not the Bridegroom Himself. Yet the Lord will say of him: “Among those born of women, none is greater than John.”

Why such greatness? Because John stands at the edge of fulfillment. The prophets spoke in shadow; John touches the threshold. Isaiah cried from afar; John cried at the door. Others announced salvation; John beholds it with his own eyes and baptizes the Creator with trembling hands.

And yet, beloved, his greatness is clothed in humility. He lives in the wilderness, feeds on simplicity, and wears the garment of repentance. His strength is not in power, but in obedience; not in comfort, but in truth. He does not flatter kings, nor soften the word of God. His life itself becomes a fast, his voice a sword, his baptism a call to rebirth.

On this radiant feast, the Church calls us not merely to admire John, but to imitate him. To prepare the way of the Lord within our own hearts. To level the mountains of pride, to fill the valleys of despair, to straighten what sin has made crooked. For the wilderness is not only a place on the map—it is the soul that waits for God.

Today, the Forerunner is born, and the path of salvation begins to open. The axe is laid at the root, not for destruction, but for healing. The waters are stirred, awaiting the descent of the Spirit. The voice is given, that the Word may soon be heard.

Therefore, let us rejoice with Elizabeth, proclaim with Zacharias, and listen with trembling hearts. For the child born today still cries out to us: Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.

Through the prayers of the Holy Glorious Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist John, may we be made ready to receive Christ, to behold the Lamb, and to enter the joy of His Kingdom.

To Him be glory, together with His eternal Father and the All-Holy, Good, and Life-Creating Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.

Amen.
