“Lift up your eyes to the Cross, O faithful, for in its wood is life, and in its shadow, salvation.”
Beloved in Christ, today the Church calls us to venerate the precious Cross of our Lord, and in solemn procession, we follow its path as a sign of triumph, faith, and hope. The Cross, which once was the instrument of shame, has become for us the throne of glory. The wood that bore the nails of our Lord now bears the hope of the whole world.
We commemorate not only the victory of Christ over death, but also the call for each of us to take up our own cross and follow Him. The procession is more than ritual; it is a pilgrimage of the soul. As we carry the image of the Cross through our churches, streets, and hearts, we are reminded that Christ leads the way through suffering into eternal life.
The hymnography of the Church tells us: “O Cross of the Lord, enlighten the ends of the earth! O precious wood, give life to those in death.” Truly, the Cross is the bridge between heaven and earth. In its shadow, the blind receive sight, the captive is freed, and the weary are refreshed. It is both weapon and refuge, judgment and mercy, suffering and glory.
Let us, therefore, behold the Cross with reverence, kiss it with faith, and follow it with courage. Let us carry its lessons into our families, our work, and our hearts. For the Cross teaches humility, patience, and love—the very virtues by which the Kingdom of God is revealed in us.
As we move in procession today, let our steps echo the steps of the saints who bore their crosses without complaint, and let our hearts be lifted to the heights of heavenly contemplation. Remember, dear faithful, the Lord does not ask us to avoid the cross, but to carry it with Him, and in carrying it, we find eternal life.
“Grant, O Lord, that we may glorify Thy holy Cross, honor its triumph, and follow Thee faithfully all our days, unto the ages of ages. Amen.”
