Father’s Day – Byzantine Rite – 21 June 2026

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today we lift our eyes with thanksgiving to God, from whom every fatherhood in heaven and on earth is named. For the Lord, who is beyond all naming, has revealed Himself to us as Father—not in dominion alone, but in mercy; not in distance, but in loving nearness.

When the Scriptures speak of fatherhood, they do not speak first of power, but of faithfulness. Abraham became a father not by flesh alone, but by obedience, for he trusted the promise of God and walked where the Lord led him. Thus he was called the father of many nations, because he believed before he understood.

So too is every father called—not merely to provide, but to guide; not merely to command, but to bless; not merely to be strong, but to be steadfast in love.

The Psalmist proclaims: “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.” In these words, we behold the holy mirror of fatherhood. For a father’s strength is not found in harshness, but in patience; not in silence, but in instruction seasoned with gentleness; not in perfection, but in perseverance.

Let us look to Saint Joseph, the righteous guardian of the Incarnate Word. He spoke few words, yet his obedience thundered louder than speech. He protected the Child Christ not with the sword, but with trust; not with pride, but with humility. In him we see that a father’s greatest work is often hidden, known fully only to God.

Fathers, you are called to be icons of the Heavenly Father in your homes. When you forgive, you reveal mercy. When you teach truth, you reflect wisdom. When you endure suffering in silence for the sake of love, you participate in the Cross of Christ. Your labor, your prayers, your quiet sacrifices are not unseen—they ascend like incense before the throne of God.

Children, honor your fathers, not because they are without fault, but because through them God has granted life, protection, and example. Pray for them, strengthen them, and when their hands grow weary, lift them with love.

And to those who carry the wound of absent or imperfect fatherhood, know this: the Father of mercies does not abandon His children. He gathers the orphaned, heals the brokenhearted, and becomes Father where earthly fathers have failed. In Him, no one is without a home.

Therefore, on this day, let us give glory to God, the true and eternal Father, and ask Him to bless all fathers with wisdom from above, courage in trial, gentleness in speech, and perseverance in love—so that every household may become a small church, and every father a servant of Christ.

To the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

Amen.
