Beloved in Christ,
Today the Church rejoices and sings with the angels, for the Queen of Heaven, the Most Holy Theotokos, has fallen asleep in the flesh and has been received into the glory of her Son. The One who bore the Light of the world now rests in the embrace of that Light, untouched by corruption, for she is the all-pure vessel chosen from eternity to bring forth the Eternal Word.
O faithful, consider the wondrous mystery revealed in her Dormition: death has not conquered her. The grave could not hold her. For what the Law of nature could not achieve, grace has fulfilled. The Virgin Mary, who said “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be unto me according to Thy word” (Luke 1:38), has now been glorified by the Word incarnate, who raised her from earthly slumber into the eternal life of heaven.
We, who dwell in the shadows of sin and death, are shown through her Dormition the hope of resurrection. For if the Mother of Life herself is received into immortal joy, then our mortal bodies, which bear the seal of Christ through baptism, shall also rise in glory. The Dormition is not sorrowful; it is the victory of life over death, light over darkness, the fulfillment of the promise given to all who love the Lord.
See how the apostles, gathered from the ends of the earth by angels’ guidance, came to witness her passing. Even they, who walked with Christ in the flesh, were filled with awe at this mystery, for the Theotokos, our advocate and intercessor, did not perish, but was taken up to heaven, to be with Him Whom she bore, where angels and archangels and all the heavenly powers rejoice with her.
Let us, therefore, venerate her with awe and devotion. Let our hearts rise with hers in prayer, for she is the bridge between heaven and earth, the mother of mercy, the refuge of sinners. Through her intercessions, may our souls be strengthened in faith, our lives filled with hope, and our hearts set upon eternal life, that we may one day partake of the joy which she now beholds without end.
O Most Holy Theotokos, Mother of God, we glorify your Dormition! Pray for us, that we may follow your example in humility, obedience, and love, that we too may rise with Christ on the last day. To You be glory forever, together with Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.
