Today, all creation keeps a festival, and the ends of the earth rejoice together, for the dawn of our salvation has appeared. From the barren womb of righteous Anna springs forth the living Gate through whom the King of Glory shall enter the world. The earth, long parched by sin, receives a wellspring of grace; the night begins to yield to the coming Light. Today, the Mother of Life is born, and with her birth, hope is restored to Adam, and joy is proclaimed to Eve.
Rejoice, O Joachim and Anna, for the reproach of barrenness is taken away, and your sorrow is crowned with gladness. What was closed is opened; what was dry blossoms like the rose. Not by human striving alone, but by the mercy of God, a child is given who shall become the spacious dwelling of the Uncontainable. From your obedience and patience, God fashions a vessel of purity, a ladder set upon the earth whose top reaches heaven.
O marvel beyond words! She who is born today is herself the beginning of wonders. Though an infant in the flesh, she is forechosen before the ages, sanctified to bear within her womb Him whom the heavens cannot contain. In her, the promise made to the fathers finds its yes; through her, the curse of ancient disobedience is loosed. For from a woman came the fall, and from a woman now comes restoration—yet not by nature alone, but by grace overflowing.
Today, the Church beholds the first fruits of redemption. The Theotokos is the living Temple, prepared not by hands, but by the Spirit; the golden lampstand that shall bear the Light of the world; the fleece made wet by heavenly dew while all the earth remained dry. In her humility, she is exalted; in her silence, she proclaims the Word; in her obedience, she heals the wound of disobedience.
Let us therefore keep this feast with spiritual joy. The Nativity of the Virgin is not only her beginning, but the beginning of our healing. If her birth brought joy to the righteous, how much more should it gladden us who have tasted the fulfillment of the promise? Let us imitate her purity, her listening heart, her readiness to say, “Let it be to me according to Your word.” For God still seeks hearts in which He may dwell.
O Most Holy Theotokos, newborn hope of the world, intercede for us who celebrate your radiant Nativity. Teach us patience in barrenness, faith in waiting, and obedience unto life. Lead us to your Son, whom you bore for the salvation of our souls. And as you were born today for the joy of all creation, so may Christ our God grant us new birth unto the Kingdom, to whom be glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.
