Holy Tuesday – Byzantine Rite – 07 April 2026

Beloved in Christ,

On this second day of Holy Week, our minds and hearts are drawn closer to the passion of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Today, the Church calls us to meditate upon the words of the Lord, the warnings against hypocrisy, and the call to vigilance in prayer, for our Lord speaks, saying:

“Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts. These are those who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.” (Mark 12:38–40)

Holy Tuesday is the day in which we are taught to examine ourselves with great honesty. Just as the Pharisees placed appearances before truth, so too can our hearts be drawn into vanity and outward show, forgetting the inward life of repentance and love. The Lord does not call us merely to display piety before men, but to cultivate humility, mercy, and faithfulness in secret, for “He who sees in secret shall reward you openly” (Matthew 6:4).

The Church also invites us to contemplate the prophecy of Christ concerning the destruction of Jerusalem (Matthew 24), for in these words we see the consequences of turning away from God, and we are reminded to watch and pray with vigilance. Holy Tuesday teaches us that the Christian life is not passive; it requires discernment, earnest prayer, and spiritual alertness.

Beloved, let us also reflect upon the parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1–13), which we read during the evening services. The lamps of the wise virgins were trimmed and burning, for they prepared their hearts with vigilance, awaiting the coming of the Bridegroom. In these days leading to Pascha, the Lord calls each of us to trim the lamps of our souls with prayer, fasting, and works of mercy, that when He comes, He may find us awake, ready to enter with Him into the eternal wedding feast.

Therefore, let us strive to turn away from hypocrisy, to cleanse our hearts of all pride and resentment, and to fill them with love for God and neighbor. Let us open our ears to the words of the Lord, our eyes to see His presence in all things, and our hands to serve, even in small acts of kindness.

In the words of the Fathers: “Do not delay, beloved, for the Judge comes. Today, prepare your soul; tomorrow may be too late.” Let us walk these holy days in repentance and humility, that with the holy women and the apostles we may stand at the Cross with steadfast hearts, and at the glorious Resurrection, receive the joy of life eternal.

Glory to You, O Christ our God, who by Your Cross and Resurrection have renewed the world.

Amen.
