Holy Thursday – Byzantine Rite – 09 April 2026

Beloved in Christ,

Today, on this most sacred of nights, we stand at the threshold of the Passion of our Lord, and our hearts are drawn into the ineffable mystery of the Mystical Supper. With trembling awe, we behold the One who, in His boundless love, humbles Himself to serve His servants.

On this night, our Lord Jesus Christ, the King of glory, took a towel and girded Himself. He stooped to wash the feet of His disciples, teaching us by His sacred example that the path to greatness is the path of humility. He who is the Creator of all did not come to be served, but to serve; He did not come to be exalted in the world’s eyes, but to lift up the lowly, to strengthen the weary, and to call sinners to repentance.

O faithful, let us not pass over in haste the lesson of this holy evening. As we partake in the Holy Mysteries, let us remember that we are called to love one another, as Christ has loved us. This love is not mere words, nor idle sentiment, but the offering of ourselves in service, in forgiveness, in mercy.

And lo, He took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying: “Take, eat; this is My Body which is broken for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” Likewise, He took the cup, saying: “This is My Blood of the New Covenant, shed for the remission of sins.” O wondrous gift! O ineffable mystery! Christ Himself gives us His life, that we may live, and He invites us into communion with Him, that we may be made one with the Divine.

Yet even as He nourished them, His heart was heavy with sorrow, for He knew the treachery that would come from one of His own. And here, beloved, is the depth of His love: He did not turn away from the cross, nor from the betrayal, nor from the suffering that awaited Him. In this, He reveals to us that love is not comfort, but steadfastness; not ease, but obedience to the will of the Father; not self-preservation, but self-giving.

Tonight, let us bow before Him with hearts contrite and spirits ready. Let us approach the Holy Table with reverence and humility, with faith and love. Let us imitate His example, serving one another in word and deed, forgiving as we are forgiven, and offering our lives as living sacrifices to the Lord.

For tomorrow, we will witness the Passion, and yet tonight, we taste the sweetness of His love, the bread of heaven, the cup of salvation, and the towel of humility. May we hold these mysteries in our hearts, that we may walk in His light and partake of His eternal joy.

Glory to You, O Lord, our God, glory to You. Amen.
