Beloved in Christ,
Today, on this Holy Monday, we enter the sacred mysteries of Christ’s Passion with hearts humbled and minds attentive. The Church calls us to meditate upon the fig tree, the anointing of our Lord, and the promise of repentance, for these lessons echo through the ages as mirrors of our own souls.
In the Gospel of this day, our Lord comes to the fig tree and finds it barren. Though it was promised the fruits of life, it bore none. So too are we called to examine our hearts: do they bear the fruits of virtue, love, and humility? Or do we, like the fig tree, appear outwardly alive but inwardly dead, failing to manifest the goodness that God has planted within us? Let us not harden our hearts, but turn with fervent repentance to God, so that we may bring forth fruits worthy of His Kingdom.
We also remember the woman who anointed the feet of Christ with precious oil. How wondrous is her faith and devotion! She poured forth her treasure freely, not counting the cost, as an offering of love to the Lord. Holy Monday reminds us that our lives, too, must be offered wholly to God—not in mere words, but in deeds of mercy, kindness, and sacrifice. Every act of love is a fragrant oil, pleasing to Christ, who sees our hearts hidden from the eyes of men.
Beloved, let us enter this Holy Week with watchfulness and vigilance. The hour of Christ’s Passion draws near, and the call to conversion is urgent. Let us cleanse our hearts, bear the fruits of repentance, and offer our lives as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God. For He is merciful, and His love reaches to the depths of every sorrowful soul.
Remember always: the barren fig tree was cursed, but the Lord’s mercy is boundless. The faithful who turn to Him in humility shall not be cast aside, but will blossom in the garden of His Kingdom. Let us therefore strive to be fruitful in spirit, compassionate in action, and steadfast in faith, that when the Lord comes in glory, He may find our hearts prepared and full of His love.
Glory to You, O Christ our God, who has shown us the way of life; glory to You.
Amen.
