Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you on this radiant feast of the Holy Guardian Angels, who stand ever watchful at our side.
Behold the mystery of the Almighty: in His infinite love and providence, He has not left us to wander alone through the valleys and wilderness of this present age. No, as once He set the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night to guide His people Israel through the desert, so now He appoints to each soul a ministering spirit, a celestial companion, that we may walk in safety along the narrow way that leads to the Kingdom.
As the Prophet-king David sang: “He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways; they shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.” (Psalm 91:11-12) Thus the angelic hosts, who behold ever the face of the Father, are sent to guard us, to strengthen us in temptation, to comfort us in sorrow, to rouse us from sloth, and to shield us from the snares of the evil one.
O ineffable mercy! The Lord of Hosts, before whom ten thousand times ten thousand stand in awe, condescends to assign His mighty ones to the lowly children of dust. Our Guardian Angels are not indifferent spectators; they are tireless defenders, intercessors, and companions, guiding us unto the inheritance prepared before the foundation of the world.
Yet, brethren, let us not grieve these heavenly guardians by our negligence. Let us not drive them to sorrow by our sins. As the ascetics of old taught: Walk always as in the presence of thine angel. With reverence, humility, and gratitude let us strive for holiness, that the work of our angel may not be in vain.
Remember, too, that these guardians are members of that celestial hierarchy which even now surrounds the Holy Altar. The Cherubim who proclaim the holiness of God, the Seraphim who burn with unceasing love, and the Thrones who bear the weight of divine justice—they all rejoice in the salvation of a single soul.
And so, beloved, on this solemn feast, let us give thanks to the Lord of Angels, who in His providence has appointed them to our side. Let us invoke their assistance daily, that strengthened by their invisible aid, we may be found worthy to join them in that eternal liturgy before the Throne of the Lamb.
Through the prayers of the Holy Guardian Angels, O Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us.
