Beloved in Christ,
Today the Church is clothed in radiant joy, for she lifts up before us Mary Magdalene, the first witness of the Resurrection, the myrrh-bearing disciple, and the one whom the risen Lord Himself called by name. Once bound by darkness, she now stands in the unsetting light of Pascha, proclaiming to the apostles: “I have seen the Lord!”
O wondrous exchange! She who once wept in the night now announces the dawn. She who stood at the foot of the Cross stands also at the threshold of the empty tomb. The Lord did not disdain her tears, but sanctified them; He did not rebuke her love, but crowned it with revelation.
In the garden, while the world still slept in sorrow, Mary Magdalene searched for Christ—not in glory, but in humility; not in triumph, but in love. And because she sought Him with a broken heart, she was granted what kings and prophets longed to see. For the Resurrection is revealed not to the proud, but to those who love much.
The angels asked her, “Woman, why do you weep?” And still she wept, for love is not satisfied with consolation alone—it longs for the Beloved Himself. Then the Gardener spoke her name, and in that single word the world was remade. Death was silenced, despair undone, and a woman became the herald of life to the apostles.
O holy Magdalene, teacher of repentance and courage! You did not flee when the disciples scattered; you did not doubt when the stone was rolled away; you did not cling to the tomb, but ran to proclaim the Living One. Thus, the Church calls you Equal-to-the-Apostles, for you preached the Resurrection before the preachers, and believed before the doubters.
Let us learn from her holy boldness. Let us not seek Christ among the dead—among old sins, old fears, and old graves—but rise with her to seek Him in obedience, in love, and in faith. For the risen Lord still calls each of us by name, inviting us from sorrow into joy, from silence into witness, from death into life.
Through the prayers of Saint Mary Magdalene, O Christ our God, grant us tears of repentance, hearts aflame with love, and voices made bold to proclaim Your Resurrection.
For You are risen indeed, and to You we give glory, together with Your eternal Father and Your all-holy, good, and life-creating Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages.
