Feast of Saint Veronica – Byzantine Rite – 12 July 2026

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today, the Church lifts before our eyes the radiant image of Saint Veronica,
the woman whose hands dared to touch God,
whose cloth dared to receive the Face of the Invisible One,
whose compassion stood firm where fear had fled.

Behold the road to Golgotha:
dust and blood mingle beneath the feet of the condemned;
the crowd roars like the sea in storm;
and in the midst of chaos, a single heart remains still in mercy.
Not a disciple, not a soldier, not a ruler—
but a woman, unnamed by the world, yet remembered by Heaven.

She did not preach with words,
nor did she wield authority or power.
She carried no banner, no weapon, no argument—
only a cloth, and a heart pierced with love.
And with that simple offering,
she approached the Suffering Servant
and wiped the Face that formed the heavens.

O wondrous exchange!
She offers a cloth dampened by compassion,
and Christ returns it sealed with His Image.
She wipes away sweat and blood,
and He imprints eternity.

Thus, the Face once hidden in humility
is revealed through mercy.

Saint Veronica teaches us today
that love does not wait for safety,
And holiness is not always loud.
While others watched from afar,
She drew near.
While others feared contamination,
she embraced defilement for the sake of love.
While the world turned its face away,
she beheld the Face of God.

And the Lord, who sees in secret,
answered her bold mercy with divine remembrance.
Her act, small in the eyes of the crowd,
became immortal in the memory of the Church.
For Christ never forgets the hands
that serve Him in suffering.

Beloved, the Face of Christ is still wounded today.
It is pressed into the poor,
the despised,
the forgotten,
The weary traveler on the road of our own cities.
Each time we draw near in compassion,
each time we wipe away tears,
each time we risk love when it is costly—
The image of Christ is impressed upon our own souls.

Saint Veronica shows us
that to see God, we must be willing to touch the Cross;
to behold His glory,
We must stand where love bleeds.

May we, like her,
carry the courage of mercy,
the boldness of tenderness,
and the humility that dares to approach Christ
when He is least recognized.

And may the Face of Christ—
The face once imprinted on cloth,
now engraved upon our hearts—
shine upon us, heal us,
and lead us into the joy of His Kingdom.

Through the prayers of Saint Veronica,
O Christ our God,
Have mercy on us and save us.

Amen.
