Beloved in Christ,
Today, the Church lifts her eyes with thanksgiving toward the mystery of motherhood, a gift woven by God into the very fabric of creation. From the beginning, when the Lord formed Eve as a helper fit for Adam, He blessed woman with the sacred vocation of life-bearing, nurturing, and self-offering love. Through mothers, the Lord teaches the world how love takes flesh.
For motherhood is not merely a function of the body, but a ministry of the soul. A mother labors not only in childbirth, but in patience, in prayer, in sleepless nights, and silent sacrifices known to God alone. Like the myrrh-bearing women who rose before dawn, mothers rise daily to serve without trumpet or acclaim, trusting that the Lord who sees in secret will reward openly.
Above all mothers stands the Most Holy Theotokos, the living Ark of the New Covenant. In her, motherhood is crowned with obedience, humility, and faith. She carried within her womb Him whom the heavens cannot contain, and she carried within her heart the sword foretold by Simeon. Standing at the foot of the Cross, she reveals to us the fullness of maternal love: a love that does not flee suffering, but remains steadfast in hope of the Resurrection.
Yet today we also honor those whose motherhood is lived in many forms: adoptive mothers, spiritual mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, and those who nurture the young in wisdom and faith. The Church herself is a mother, giving birth to her children in the waters of Baptism and nourishing them with the Bread of Life. In every act of compassionate care, in every word of instruction spoken in love, the maternal heart of the Church is revealed.
We remember as well those whose hearts ache on this day—those who have lost mothers, those who long to be mothers, and those whose experience of motherhood has been marked by sorrow. The Lord who entrusted His own Mother to the beloved disciple also entrusts every wounded heart to His tender mercy. No tear shed in love is forgotten before God.
Therefore, let us give thanks today for our mothers and for all who reflect the maternal love of God. Let us honor them not only with words, but with lives shaped by gratitude, faithfulness, and mercy. And let us commend them to the intercessions of the Theotokos, that they may be strengthened in love, crowned with joy, and remembered eternally in the Kingdom of Heaven.
To our God, who reveals His nurturing love through mothers and through His Holy Church, be glory, honor, and worship, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.
Amen.
