Homily for the Feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy – Byzantine Rite – 01 March 2026

Beloved in Christ,
Glory be to God who has led us from darkness into His marvelous light!

Today, the Church exults in the Feast of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, a holy day in which we commemorate the restoration of the venerable icons of our Lord, His Most Pure Mother, and all the saints, and the triumph of true faith over heresy. Let us open our hearts to the wisdom of this day, that the Spirit of Truth may illuminate us.

Once, in ages past, the enemy sought to remove from our sight the holy images of Christ and His saints. But the Lord, Who is the Light of the world, preserved the faithful. Through the prayers of the righteous and the courage of the Church, the icons were restored, and the voice of Orthodoxy prevailed. O faithful, behold how God guards His Church! The invisible hand of Providence protects not only the visible images, but the very image of God within us.

Icons are not wood and paint alone, but windows into heaven. They call us to worship the One who became man for our salvation. When we venerate them, we honor Christ Himself, Whom they depict. Let us remember, then, that to defend Orthodoxy is to defend the truth of God incarnate, His saving Cross, and His eternal Resurrection.

The triumph celebrated today is not merely historical; it is ever-present. For each soul faces the temptation to deny the truth, to hide from God, to bow to the idols of the age—be they pride, selfishness, or false doctrine. Let us, then, in our own hearts, restore the icons of faith: the love of Christ, the mercy of God, the patience of the saints. Let us offer our own minds and deeds as living icons, reflecting the light of God in the darkness of this world.

O faithful, let us sing with joy and thanksgiving: the Church has been preserved; Orthodoxy has triumphed! Through the prayers of the Theotokos and all the saints, may our faith be steadfast, our love unwavering, and our hope eternal. For He who conquered sin and death lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages.

Amen.
