Feast of Saint George – Byzantine Rite – 23 April 2025

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,

Today, we gather in the light of divine grace to celebrate the glorious and radiant feast of Saint George, the great martyr and trophy-bearer, whose life and witness have inspired countless souls throughout the ages. His name is inscribed in the heavenly books, his faith shines like the sun, and his example calls us to spiritual courage in our journey toward the Kingdom of God.

Saint George was a soldier, not only of the Roman Empire but, more importantly, of the heavenly King. He put on the armor of righteousness, wielded the sword of faith, and stood firm against the adversary. When earthly rulers sought to turn his heart away from Christ, he stood unwavering, proclaiming that his true allegiance belonged to the Lord of Hosts. He was not afraid of suffering, for he knew that Christ had already conquered death.

Like the three youths in the furnace, Saint George faced torment and trial with unwavering confidence in God. He endured beatings, imprisonment, and unspeakable tortures, yet his lips never ceased to glorify the Name of Jesus. What is this strength? What is this power that enables a man to overcome the fear of death? It is the presence of the Holy Spirit which filled his heart with divine love and sustained him in his trials.

In his victorious martyrdom, Saint George becomes for us a model of faith, hope, and perseverance. He reminds us that we, too, are called to be soldiers of Christ, to fight the good fight against the passions, against the temptations of this world, and against the powers of darkness. His life is a testimony that faith is not a mere word but a fire that burns in the heart, a light that overcomes darkness.

Beloved faithful, let us not only venerate this great saint but also strive to imitate him. Let us take up our spiritual weapons: prayer, fasting, and love. Let us remain steadfast in the faith, never bowing before the idols of this age—whether they be pride, material wealth, or selfish desires. Instead, let us lift our eyes to Christ, who gives us strength, who crowned Saint George with eternal glory, and who will also grant us victory if we remain faithful to Him.

Through the prayers of the Holy Great Martyr George, O Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us.

Amen.
